Lewis Hamilton is a big advocate of the inclusivity initiative and the fight against racism. The Briton has used his stature in every opportunity to bring important issues to light. And not he is not just a vocal advocate, as the world champion has taken major steps to bring more diversity to motorsport.

And those steps, toward inclusivity of minority groups in motorsport, brought the Hamilton Commission to life. The commission researched the lack of diversity in the paddocks which Hamilton must’ve also noticed in his 14 years in F1. The findings indicated a lack of inclination toward the STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects, necessary for an automobile engineer.

Hamilton took active steps to promote STEM subjects to students to fulfill his agenda of increased diversity in motorsport. And even if the world of F1 isn’t seeing major changes yet, the Mercedes man’s efforts are bearing fruit.

How the Hamilton Commission has changed this form of motorsport?

The Hamilton Commission is playing a part in the Extreme E. Extreme E is an FIA-sanctioned off-road racing series and the commission is playing a part in the series.

McLaren’s senior principal and race engineer, Leena Gade, explained the influence of the commission on their sport. “But also they partnered with Lewis Hamilton’s organisation to make sure that you’re getting more people in who are coming from diverse backgrounds. And I think that’s not spoken about quite so much,” she said.

She added, “At the moment, dealing with the Hamilton Commission, you get to have an extra team member. So instead of having nine, you can have ten because you’re bringing somebody in who wouldn’t normally get the opportunity.”

Extreme E imposes restrictions on the number of personnel allowed during an event to reduce the carbon footprint. However, thanks to the Hamilton Commission’s initiative, all teams can add an extra member. These small steps work up in a big way to help and support the underrepresented communities in motorsport.

The senior principal, in awe of the efforts, also suggested the commission isn’t talked about enough. Especially in the age of social media, no good thing should remain in the shadows.
