At the moment, Mercedes and Ferrari are a whole world (more like a universe) apart. Who would have thought that the downfall of the Scuderia would have been so bad?

Sure, they weren’t really challenging for the title during the better part of the last decade, but they were at least capable of getting the odd win along with being podium regulars.

Nevertheless, during that period of time, Lewis Hamilton has almost achieved a monopoly over podium finishes.

However, Hamilton is not happy to remain unchallenged by the Ferraris. He hopes that the Scuderia can get their act together and compete against him and Mercedes for titles.

In an interview ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton said (translated by Google), “I hope before my career ends that I can fight with Ferrari again. The races we saw last year against Vettel and Leclerc were great fun. I hope I can go back to fighting with them before I quit.”

He might not be too happy to hear that Ferrari themselves have admitted that it’ll take them a long time to get back to the top. Will Hamilton still be around by then? He may as well be, considering he’s still at the top of his game.

But surely after so long, without a proper title challenge, the sport may get a bit drab for him.

The 6-time World Champion is quite open to admitting that the Scuderia has a special place in his heart. He said, “It’s never been a secret, I’ve always been a huge Ferrari fan.

“Of course when you’re in Formula 1 and you see certain things change, they can change some ideas. (But) Ferrari still is an incredible brand, when you come to Italy and see these fans you understand why Ferrari has so much charm.

“Red has fans all over the world which is why it’s so important to F1.”

This is precisely why the team faces so much media pressure and criticism, especially in the current season (and rightly so). As the most iconic team in the history of F1 racing, underperforming to such an extent is bound to have big implications.

For the sake of a more competitive title fight, if not for Hamilton’s wishes, we hope the Prancing Stallion gets back to its glory days soon.
