Though we are only through a third of the 2023 F1 season, Max Verstappen‘s performances have made it seem as if the WDC has already been wrapped up. The only probable way Verstappen misses out on P1 might be if he withdraws from a race or another racer divebombs into his RB19. But that is less likely to happen. However, have you ever wondered to whom would he voluntarily concede victory, if he decided to? Well, it is time to stop wondering, as he has given his answer to that question. And it is none other than fellow 2-time World Champion, Fernando Alonso.
In 2015, Fernando Alonso moved from Ferrari to McLaren, signing a contract for $39 million. The move was heavily influenced by the money that it would earn him. But what happened after that was dismaying for him and his F1 career. Despite the greedy move, Verstappen believes that Alonso deserves better. The Dutchman has already won 5 out of 7 races this year. If he does not DNF, the victories might keep piling up. Surprisingly, the Dutchman revealed why he would like to lose to Fernando in a fair battle.
According to Motorsport-Total, Verstappen said, “Fernando [Alonso]. I really like him. He’s a real racer, and he deserves it. He never gave up. You can see how much he loves the sport and dear God, he’s really had a lot of years in bad cars that were only able to drive in the midfield. This love could also be lost. But he’s a real racer, an animal. So if you ask me about a rider I’d most likely want to win, it’s Fernando”

There are certain things that Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso have in common. One is that both of them are 2-time world champions. They have also been on the podium together 5 times this year. This also means that they have their share of conversations on the podium and in the cool-down room. Maybe that is where this sense of mutual respect is growing from.
This is not the first instance where Verstappen and Alonso have shown great sportsmanship and respect for each other. In an earlier interview, the Spaniard was asked if he would team up with Verstappen for the Le Mans 24. In reply, as quoted by Express, Alonso said, “That would be an honor.”
