Aston Martin recently bid adieu to its team boss Otmar Szafnauer, who had been with the team for 12 years. Now, as the seat is yet to be filled, the attention has been turned to Martin Whitmarsh. The most obvious person in the line to the top, Whitmarsh, gets ready for his new role. However, there might be some history between Sebastian Vettel and the rumored team principal.
Back in 2010, Sebastian Vettel was en route to winning the first of his four championships. However, the road to the crown wasn’t easy. During the Belgian GP, Vettel crashed into Jenson Button. While trying to overtake the Aussie, Vettel lost control of his Red Bull, ramming it into the side of Button’s McLaren. Although the race wasn’t over for either driver, it took a blow on Button’s race.

Looking back, Whitmarsh was harsh on the criticism towards Vettel as well. Then, as McLaren‘s team principal and CEO, Whitmarsh said, “he makes a habit of colliding with other drivers. Jenson was in a strong position and it hasn’t only damaged his world championship chances but it’s also bad for our team.”

As tensions were at a high, he also added, “He’s developing. But when you’re fighting for the title, this sort of thing is not easy. It affects not only him but also those around him.”
Now, working with a four-time champion would be a different experience for Whitmarsh, who will surely have less to complain about his driver. Further, Vettel has played a crucial role in helping Aston Martin ready itself for a better future.
