When a team is dominating the F1 grid, they invite jealousy and accusations from its rivals. And Red Bull has been on the receiving end of such things. But in 2022, there was one thing that they were accused of and found guilty as well – breaching the cost cap. And the FIA fined them $7 million and a 10% reduction in wind tunnel time. Now that RB has been suspected to breach it for the 2nd time in a row, Helmut Marko has shifted the blame onto the FIA to save himself.
There has been a lot of chatter around the $135 million cost cap for 2023. Many teams find it restricting, but others are excelling while staying within the budget. Red Bull is a part of the latter. But are they? The Milton-Keynes outfit is one of two teams who have been found of breaching the cost cap for this year. Both Mercedes drivers said that RB should be strictly dealt with for this repeat offense. But Marko has deflected the blame back onto the governing body.
Marko said, as quoted by F1maximaal, “The regulations of that entire budget limit are still too open to much interpretation and it’s not about the facts. That’s why there are discussions and that needs to be clarified.”

There are only 2 major occasions when Marko makes the headlines. One is when he defends Red Bull against their rivals. And the other is when he speaks about the relatively underperforming 2nd driver in either RB or AlphaTauri.

After 5 races of getting eliminated before Q3, Sergio Perez finally secured P9 in Hungary. And he successfully converted that P9 into a P3, getting a double podium for the team. Marko, who had the most sour look on his face when Perez crashed in FP1 on Friday, turned into somewhat of a smile as he acknowledged the Mexican racer’s progress after the Hungarian GP.
“He is clearly improving after fighting his way from ninth on the grid to third in Hungary,” Marko told OE24, as quoted by Express. “Finally he made it to Q3 again. You can see an upward trend.” Finally, some relief for Perez. The most critical man on the team has praised him.
