It wasn’t too long ago when FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem went through a horrible personal tragedy. Sulayem recently lost his son Saif Ben Sulayem to a car crash. Saif was an ex-racer himself who competed amidst the likes of current F1 rookies Logan Sargeant and Oscar Piastri. The FIA boss has now announced the passing of a WRC driver who too lost his life while behind the wheel.

Despite all the safety upgrades year after year, motor racing remains one of the most dangerous sports out there. Ben Sulayem’s son wasn’t even driving competitively when he had his fatal crash. This begs the question, is FIA doing enough to ensure drivers’ safety? Are governments doing enough to ensure road safety?

Breen’s sad passing shows that whatever we do, we can never make a sport like rallying a hundred percent safe. However, efforts to eliminate as many threats to life as possible should continue. Here’s hoping that we do not get to hear such a piece of news again. Rest in Peace Craig.
