Formula 1 is a world of margins and a tenth of a second and every millimeter makes a world of difference. These small margins exist not only on the track but in the day-to-day of F1 as well. Every tiny decision can have massive implications, and we commonly refer to it as the butterfly effect. This is exactly what happened with Fernando Alonso back in 2009 when his greed for a rumored $100 million contract and commitment issues came in the way of him potentially winning two more championships. Let us explain!

Before the 2008 season began, Alonso had become one of the most sought-after drivers on the grid. His broken relationship with Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren garage forced a move, and teams were standing on one leg to sign the Spaniard. Red Bull was also among many trying to get Alonso’s services. However, as revealed by Christian Horner during an interview posted on Twitter, Alonso “missed his chance.”

When asked how close Red Bull was to signing Alonso, Horner replied, “We got very close. Helmut and I went to see his management at the end of 2008 for the 2009 and 10 seasons. We offered him a two-year contract. Sorry, it was 2008 and nine. He would only sign up for one year and Red Bull’s position.. was a two-year deal or nothing. He wouldn’t commit to that. “

Ever since the 2008 season, the Spaniard has been second at best in terms of the championship standings. The missed Red Bull opportunity has become somewhat of a bad omen for him. In fact, history is repeating itself as a young generational talent is cruising in the RBR car whilst Alonso can only throw caution in the wind and accept the ultimate outcome.

Alonso did this during the buildup of the Spanish GP. He said, “Is Red Bull not participating? I don’t think realistically we can fight for the victory, let’s be clear,” he said. “Red Bull have been very dominant all season long and I don’t see any reason why, in Barcelona, they should not aim for a one-two. But let’s see what we can do.”
