Since the Monaco GP, things are looking up for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. The Briton has become more comfortable with the upgraded W14 and found pace again. Since then, he has been on the podium twice and looks like a happy man again. While the unfortunate 2021 Abu Dhabi GP might still be haunting him, he has made a strong comeback. And a former British racing driver has lauded him for the journey back to competing for podiums and victories.
Since the ill-fated night of the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP, Hamilton had a downhill journey. From almost winning a record-breaking 8th WDC in 2021 to finishing P6 in 2022, the woes increased. Even the beginning of 2023 was no good. Adding to his list of problems was a delayed contract renewal that is still not finalized. Despite all this, the 7-time champion fights on. Damon Hill has commended Hamilton for the same.
Hill said, as quoted by formulapassion.it, “It’s admirable the way Lewis held on after what happened in Abu Dhabi. He’s got back to work and this year he’s driving better than he’s ever done before. He is starting to tune in to the car and has solved some of the car’s problems. I would be surprised if he doesn’t want to get out of the scene by winning the eighth title: he is absolutely motivated by this goal. He has a certain longevity, he takes care of himself.”

He further added, “He needs a competitive car, even a small chance: if he has it, someone like Lewis will be up to the challenge. At the moment we are seeing a happier Hamilton, and therefore faster. Lewis is said to be closing a long-term deal that goes beyond his racing career. Mercedes itself is involved, so there’s a bit more bureaucracy in this deal.”

The Austrian GP is the home race for Red Bull. And by the looks of things, Max Verstappen should be able to add another P1 trophy to his collection. The only two contenders closest to challenging him are Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. As per former World Champion, Emerson Fittipaldi, Hamilton is fit to do so.
Fittipaldi said, as quoted by mirror.co.uk, “We could have a surprise from Mercedes because it looks like Lewis is coming back and they’re getting the act together.” He also said he believes Toto Wolff when he speaks positively about the new upgrades for the next few GPs.
