The debate about the greatest driver of all time is always joined at the hip with the debate of superior machinery. Simply put, every great driver in the history of the sport was only as good as the car they drove. This is a general understanding. However, this is where some take the shine away from a driver’s achievements. After all, the best sword needs a worthy warrior to yield it. However, these statements often reduce a driver’s driving ability down to their car and/or luck. This is exactly what happened when Fernando Alonso was recently asked to talk about Lewis Hamilton.

The Spaniard sat down with Spanish news outlet Marca for an expansive interview. During the interview, the Aston Martin man was asked for his opinion on his first McLaren teammate. The Spaniard shared how he has massive respect for the rookie who beat him in equal machinery. However, the Spaniard also reduced his achievements to sheer luck.

“I have a lot of respect for him. After all, we have rarely coincided in our careers in the same place. Maybe this year we find ourselves racing together and with similar cars, in this part of the year. In Australia, – it was a very close fight,” said Alonso.

“But yes, I still think he is one of the best in history, but at the same time, he has been lucky or has known to be in a dominant car for many years. When that happens, Schumacher won 7 titles, Lewis also 7, Verstappen is on his way to third, I won two. To be champion you need the best car,” he added.

There is no lie in Alonso’s assessment of being in the best car to be on top. However, most F1 drivers don’t appreciate this correlation. Maybe in 2023, we will see the old foes go head-to-head once again.

However, more than battling it out on track with Hamilton, the Spaniard, similar to the fans, wants to see a repeat of 2021.

Fernando Alonso also wants to see Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen go head-to-head again

During the same interview, Alonso revealed his thoughts on Max Verstappen as well. The Red Bull man is in incredible form since the 2022 season and looks to be on the same level in the current season as well. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind, Verstappen is being helped by the superiority of his car as well compared to the rest.

However, even Alonso wants to see Hamilton Vs Verstappen one more time before either hang up their helmets.

“It’s a challenge trying to measure up to him (Verstappen) and trying to find them, but right now he seems unstoppable. It is always good to challenge this type of driver, like Hamilton, because curiosity grows, to know if it will be possible to beat him and find those weak points in the future,” said Alonso.

Same Alonso, same! The entire world is yearning to see round two of the 2021 season. However, for now, the Dutchman is overpowered by his car and Hamilton is struggling with his.

However, the season is still young and if we see a three-way battle between the world champions on the grid, it will be a sight to behold.
