“He Can’t Finish in Front of Hamilton”: Mercedes Urged to Make Russell the Second Driver Amid Dissatisfied Lewis Hamilton

The Brackley unit usually depended on Hamilton to bring in the best results. However, Russell’s debut has totally turned the tide around, as many favor him over the seven-time world champion.

Mercedes drama has begun between George Russell and Lewis Hamilton

Fans widely regard George Russell as a very ambitious driver. Putting in results for the team, irrespective of the conditions and maintaining consistency, is a key element to him. Though he debuted with the Silver Arrows’ only this season, it looks like it’s only his fifth year with them. In fact, the Britisher is the only driver to finish consistently in the top 5 this season.

However, Formula 1 journalist Peter Windsor is not very impressed with the current state of the Brackley camp. Making his support for Hamilton clear, he claimed, “If I was team principal at Mercedes, I would have signed Russell to be second driver. I had put a contract under his nose that says he can’t finish in front of Hamilton.”

The journalist also pointed out a very vital moment in Miami and reflected, “Russell could also have kept behind Hamilton and not overtake him despite the fresh tires. In the past, this often happened between teammates, so why not now? Still, I think it never crossed his mind with Russell. He’s ambitious and always wants to win.” 

Should the Silver Arrows heed this advice?

These are very bold claims from a notably disappointed Windsor. However, there has been an undeniable Russell wave that has overtaken the fans. The 24- year old’s sensational drive from a gloomy p12 to p5 at Miami is one for the books. In very little time, his stress handling with a championship-winning team despite ‘porpoising’ struggles has not gone unnoticed by fans.
