Netflix’s docu-series ‘Drive to Survive’ completely changed the face of F1. It made stars out of not just drivers, but also the team management. And the person to best benefit from it was Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner. Everybody loved his unfiltered personality despite the team being the worst on the grid. With Nico Hulkenberg coming on board in 2023, things were expected to look better. But there is no major change and Steiner says he has no choice but to accept it and move on.
In 2021, Haas scored 0 points in the entire season. 2022 was better with 35 points on the board. And with an experienced driver like Hulkenberg joining the team, 2023 should have been even better. But it has been subpar because of inconsistent car performance. And the $5 million worth (according to Express) Italian Team Principal too is critical of the VF-23 but has to dejectedly keep going.
Steiner said, as quoted by Speedweek, “At the Hungaroring, we have to make do with what we have. We need to learn more about the behavior of the car. And the best way to do that is when the car is on the track, simulation in honor. In a Formula 1 where there are no more test drives, in addition to the test drives before and after the season as well as the Pirelli tests, you have to use the practice Friday to experiment.”

Nico Hulkenberg Take an Optimistic Long-Term View Despite Haas’ Problems Remaining Unsolved
Haas has one big problem this season. Their car is good enough to reach Q3 as Nico Hulkenberg has proved on occasions. But their race pace is very poor and can’t match their qualifying performance. To make things worse, they put up a horror show at the British GP with a Double DNF. But Hulkenberg believes the solution lies not in the short term but in the distant future.
Hulkenberg said, as quoted by GPblog, “These issues can only be solved when everyone works closely together, and that’s exactly what we’re doing. It might not be a short-term fix but we’re confident we’ll work through them.”

Guenther Steiner can exploit the summer break to at least make the VF-23 more consistent, if not quicker during the race. But the Hungarian GP this weekend should see no improvement if what he claims is true.
