It is a widely known fact that, in his second season at Renault, Daniel Ricciardo placed a tattoo bet with Cyril Abiteboul – if Danny achieved a podium, the French boss would get a tattoo of the former’s choice. As fate would have it, the Australian featured twice on the top step last season, one at the Nurburgring, and the other at Imola.
However, in 2021 the seven-time Grand Prix winner shifted to McLaren, while Cyril departed Renault as it transitioned to Alpine. And since then, people have been asking Ricciardo about Abiteboul’s tattoo.
Well, all of us can relax, for the bet is very much alive, and Cyril is still on board!

Daniel Ricciardo clears up the air about the bet with Cyril Abiteboul
The 32-year-old was at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed event, promoting his Woking-based outfit. And, as expected, fans wanted an update on the wager with his former boss.
He said, “So, it’s a great question. I have been in contact with Cyril, so it’s still alive. It yet hasn’t happened, but the world will know when it happens. It will be documented, I am hoping and I mean I keep saying this, but I am hoping it gets done soon.
“He is still on board, he doesn’t want to not let it happen. But yeah, hopefully soon, now that the world’s kinda opening up a little more, I think it will start to make it easier to get in the right place at the right time,” Ricciardo concluded.

The Aussie has a bet with Mclaren’s CEO as well
The Honey Badger joined the Woking-based outfit this season to compete in the 2021 championship. Zak Brown, the team’s CEO, was inspired by Abiteboul and placed a bet with Ricciardo – if Danny scores a podium, Brown will give him keys to the Dale Earnhardt Jr’s, 1984 Wrangler Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Ricciardo was excited and replied, “I feel like I’ve got to give you something though.”
Brown intervened and quickly gave the idea of doing Daniel’s podium celebration, to which Ricciardo responded, “Done. The trophy and the boot you’ll drink from, you can keep it.”
So far this season, the Australian hasn’t been able to feature on the podium. However, he is steadily improving and even secured a P5 finish at the recently concluded British GP.
