We might have just witnessed the last Monaco Grand Prix in F1 for a while. The circuit, known as the crown jewel at the pinnacle of motorsport, does not have a contract to host a race after 2022. For an extension, there are several changes that the F1 wants made to the weekend.

As the Automobile Club de Monaco (the governing body for motorsports in the principality) is not budging, this friction between F1 and ACM has meant that the future of the race is still uncertain.

What are the demands of F1?

Formula One has grown a lot in terms of development and popularity in the past couple of years. The sport wants certain changes to the Monaco Grand Prix weekend and these are three of them.

The owner of F1, Liberty Media, wants Monaco to pay a bit more money than they previously have because of their special status in the sport. Second, they want flexibility over when they can hold the race in Monaco and not be bound to hold it in the month of May.

Lastly, they want to have the broadcast rights for the race so that they can show it the way they want and not how the ACM works. Unsurprisingly, ACM has not agreed to these terms of the sport and is holding its own.

However, all these requested changes are pretty logical and perhaps the ACM needs to realize that the sport has outgrown the previous norms. Both F1 drivers and fans will hope that both parties can reach an agreement and a sign new contract soon.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen don’t want to lose Monaco from the calendar

“There is zero opportunity to overtake in a race but that has been the case for some time, it needs to change, we have had the same format for years. It is the best venue, the most beautiful place we get to race at but you know it is never exciting for fans,” said Hamilton.

Verstappen, too, revealed that it is a special weekend for everyone involved in motorsports. He said, “I don’t think you can replace Monaco. Monaco has such a history. Of course, it takes time to build that. You have to find a middle way between these kinds of things — Monaco and, of course, permanent race tracks,”

It would indeed be a loss for both Formula One and Monaco to lose each other going forward. So hopefully, both parties can reach a bit of a compromise and ensure that racing continues at the principality in the future.
