After the 2023 Austrian GP, a downtrodden Lewis Hamilton, despite being asked to keep quiet, had a lot to say. Among his many statements to the media, Hamilton suggested a new rule the FIA should implement. Hamilton’s rule change suggestion was directly targeted at Red Bull and their dominance. However, Hamilton’s idea was quickly ridiculed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Christian Horner. Now boss Toto Wolff has also made his thoughts public. To add insult to injury and the ongoing tussle, Wolff comments sides with his arch-rival.

First, Verstappen subtly ridiculed Hamilton’s suggestion with a one-liner. Red Bull’s boss was much more elaborate on his take on the suggestion made by the Mercedes world champion. Toto Wolff made similar comments to point out how “Hamilton’s proposal is not feasible.”

Speaking to Motorsport-Total, Wolff said, “Hamilton’s proposal is not feasible. Hamilton just had an idea. We just have to be better. You can’t complain when a team does a better job than everyone else and just dominates with one driver. That’s because they deserve it and just did the job well. Provided, of course, they stick to the regulations. Technically, as well as sportingly and financially,” he concluded. (Translated by Google)

Wolff’s comments completely oppose Hamilton’s and resonate with Horner’s. However, Horner was not as kind with his words as Wolff critiquing Hamilton’s proposal.

Christian Horner brutally disregards the proposal made by Lewis Hamilton to stunt Red Bull’s dominance

The Brit is receiving backlash from all angles and Horner did not shy away from it while expressing his thoughts as well. Keeping in mind Red Bull already gets reduced wind tunnel time for winning the constructors’ championship, Horner hit back at Hamilton with logic and the already existing handicap rules.

Horner said, “He’s obviously speaking from personal experience. I think it would be incredibly hard to control. How on earth could you say, ‘All right, August 1st, let’s go!’ How can you prevent people from thinking about or working on next year’s cars?”

Horner also outlined, “We have a handicap system in Formula 1 by reducing the time spent in the wind tunnel. Franz (Tost, AlphaTauri Team Principal) has almost twice as much time as we do. That’s a significant handicap.”

We doubt the Mercedes Brit will have his wish granted by the FIA. However, at least Hamilton can be satisfied with the fact his team is on a better developmental path. Perhaps with consistent effort, they might just be able to catch Red Bull.
