F1 can be cruel at times, with drivers getting laid off and not getting another chance again. Little did anyone expect Mick Schumacher to suffer such a fate. Besides being the prodigy of a 7-time champion, Mick has shown his skills in F3 and in F1 to some extent. Yet, the 2020 F2 champion won’t be racing in F1 after just spending 2 seasons.

Haas announced that they will replace Mick Schumacher for the 2023 season ahead of the season-finale in Abu Dhabi. Schumacher had been negotiating with the American team for a contract extension for a while. But his 2022 performances were not consistent enough to convince Haas to retain him.

Mick always wanted to emulate his father Michael Schumacher and become a world champion in F1. Although his first goal was to live up to the performance level of his father. He wanted to be beady-eyed and observant in the sport for a few years.

On the F1 Beyond the Grid podcast in 2021, Schumacher explained this dream and how he looks at the bigger picture in F1. He said, “Yea, I would say that. Obviously, everything I am doing right now is for the bigger picture.”

“I am not in it [F1] for only a year or two, I wanna be in the sport because well obviously I love it but also I wanna be in it for a few more years.”

Haas’s decision has certainly affected Mick’s dream to be in F1 for a long time. Although he will be a reserve driver at Mercedes, it will take time and luck too for the young German to find a race seat in F1.

What’s next for Mick Schumacher?

Mick Schumacher has got a reserve role at the Silver Arrows for the 2023 season. But a race seat at Mercedes looks unlikely for Mick as Lewis Hamilton is determined to stay in the sport for a few more years. Meanwhile, George Russell has also bedded in well at Brackley.

So, for a full-time comeback, the young German driver will have to look toward other teams. Schumacher also is not a part of the Ferrari driver academy program now. Since his Ferrari ties are cut, he may not want to look back in the direction of Maranello.

Although, a futuristic look at F1 in the upcoming 5 years, and Mick may still be in one team’s sights – Alfa Romeo. As Audi enters F1 in 2026 with the Sauber team, they might want a German driver on their roster.

Audi has already shown signs of team building, as they got German boss Andreas Seidl on board at Sauber for 2023 and beyond.
