The 2021 championship was especially hurtful for Mercedes. The team won the constructors’ championship, but Lewis Hamilton lost out on the record-eighth driver’s championship. Hamilton went into isolation following the events of the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP, but came back with a powerful statement. However, that statement did not age well as the 2022 Formula 1 championship is now concluded.

Hamilton went into a social media hiatus after the 2021 season. When he returned, Hamilton made a powerful statement in the build-up to the 2022 season.
Hamilton said, “If you think what you saw at the end of last year was my best, wait until you see me this year.” Whereas Toto Wolff said in the last episode of Drive to Survive season 4, “Everybody has a target on their backs next year.”
Safe to say, these statements did not age well. The Mercedes team did not only struggle throughout most of the current season, but only managed one win, thanks to George Russell. On the other hand, Hamilton finished no better than P2 and his long-standing record for a race in all seasons competed is also gone.
To make things worse, Haas’ Kevin Magnussen has more poles than Hamilton as he ends the season on a low with no wins and poles.

This challenging season definitely did not pan out as Mercedes would’ve hoped. Especially struggling with the new 2022 regulations. The poor outing in the current season, coupled with the statements, has become a matter of mockery among the fans.
Fans mock Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff as their statements age poorly in 2022
2022 will definitely be a year for Mercedes to forget. The team could not capitalize on their late surge and ended the season behind Ferrari in third in the constructors’ table as well.
The fans are now brutally mocking the statements from the two Mercedes men.
and now that the season’s over, we can officially say that nothing in this sport has ever aged more poorly than these two statements 💀 pic.twitter.com/PkONuS5EIM

Fans are especially mocking the “target on their backs” comment with an image of Hamilton holding his back. The Brit experienced extreme back pain after the race in Baku because of the porpoising.
I mean Toto was kinda right, they were looking at the back of a lot of teams this season.

Ratmilton got exposed hard this season. 0 wins 0 poles, freaking Kmag has a pole… This guy needs a car 1 full second faster than everyone to look good, without it he's just a midfield driver at best.
