Last night, Carlos Sainz won over hearts in the Formula 1 community. More than just etching himself in the hearts of the Tifosi, the entire F1 world watched in awe as the Ferrari driver delivered the performance of his life. The Singapore GP—the first race this season that hasn’t gone the way of Red Bull. The Singapore GP—a Carlos Sainz masterclass from beginning to end. While his on-track exploits might’ve impressed almost everyone, a certain off-track skill came under heavy scrutiny.
I had the chance to play a round of golf with the legend and friend @DJohnsonPGA ⛳. The score was pretty even 😝

First, let’s talk about what he did in Singapore. After starting the race on pole, he dictated the pace of everyone behind him. Knowing that the Red Bulls were out of position, this was his best chance of a win this season. He didn’t need to be told that twice. Towards the end of the race, he ensured Lando Norris got DRS behind him, so the fast-approaching Mercedes W14s of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton couldn’t get past. In doing so, not only did he help Norris, but he also helped himself. After he crossed the finish line, he established one thing: his driving skills were genius. But that’s precisely what made him a laughingstock on Twitter.

The genius of his driving skills in F1 cannot be questioned. But his driving skills in golf? That’s a different question altogether. In F1, Sainz is known as the Smooth Operator. After his Singapore masterclass, he even said, “This was my smoothest operation in Ferrari.” Taking inspiration from that, the PGA Tour posted a video of Sainz teeing off on its official handle. But the caption was what caught everyone’s attention. It read, “He’s a smoooooth operator! 🏌️♂️🏎️ Congratulations to @CarlosSainz55 on his win today @F1.” Referencing this, golf fans weren’t too impressed with Sainz’s skills and called him out.
No one in the golf world would want a swing like Carlos Sainz
It’s no secret Sainz loves playing golf. But just because he loves it doesn’t mean he’s good at it. Yes, he’s definitely better than his best friend, Lando Norris, but the Spaniard still has a long way to go. Even he knows that. That didn’t stop Twitterati from assuming the role of the FIA and scrutinizing Sainz.
A few fans called his swing a joke, and others pointed out how it isn’t shallow enough. Some even compared his driving skills to their own. Here’s what they had to say: –
I’ve spent my life trying to (and failing) NOT swing like that
