Mick Schumacher’s F1 career didn’t get off to the kind of start that was expected as he was sacked only after two years at Haas. Toto Wolff took Schumacher in as reserve driver. However, a permanent seat looks like a far-fetched dream now. Nonetheless, an RB insider made his Mick Schumacher wish public by going against Helmut Marko. Who is this insider?
It’s known that Wolff asked the RB team if it was possible to accommodate him into the Red Bull driver program. Helmut Marko advised that Wolff is responsible for him and questioned “Why should we take Schumacher?” Furthermore, replying to Ralf Schumacher’s accusations of Marko having a personal problem with Mick, the RB taskmaster replied “I have nothing against him. It just doesn’t fit with us.”
Despite Marko’s comments, AlphaTauri TP Franz Tost revealed that he hasn’t given up on Mick Schumacher yet. It was earlier revealed that when the Red Bull family was deciding on AlphaTauri’s second driver for 2023, Franz Tost asked for Mick Schumacher. And now he mourns Schumacher’s absence from the sport as he asks the Mercedes reserve drive to grab whatever opportunity the future presents in F1.

According to Speedweek.com, Franz Tost said in an interview with Sport.de, “I regret that Mick is not in Formula 1, he would have earned a seat in Formula 1. I haven’t given up on him yet. I would be happy if he gets a seat in Formula 1. It doesn’t matter which team, if the opportunity arises, he has to take it. He doesn’t have the opportunity to vote for long.” [translated via Google]
Franz Tost must really want Mick Schumacher as he’s going against Helmut Marko’s wish. However, it is Franz Tost’s last year at AlphaTauri as the TP as he will be stepping down next year. Nonetheless, Helmut Marko recently revealed why De Vries was given preference over Mick Schumacher.

As we already know, Franz Tost really wanted Mick Schumacher. However, AlphaTauri being Red Bull’s sister team and acting as a feeder team for Red Bull cannot make the driver decision on its own. Marko revealed that Christian Horner wasn’t a fan of Nyck De Vries yet he was given preference over Mick Schumacher because he was a better fit for the Red Bull philosophy.
According to the Inside Line F1 podcast, Helmut Marko said “Basically it’s AlphaTauri, but we’re a big family and we get opinions. He [Christian Horner] was not a fan of De Vries. Franz Tost wanted Mick Schumacher. But Mick was with the Ferrari Academy for his whole career. Basically, AlphaTauri is a junior team. De Vries is different to Schumacher in that he had just one very successful race in Monza, so he could fit into our philosophy.”
