Ahead of the qualifying session at the Hungarian GP, it is Nicholas Latifi who has grabbed the headlines. In the last practice session, before we decide on the grid order for Sunday, the Canadian set the benchmark time in the dying stages of the session.

FP3 featured wet conditions for the drivers and, because of excessive rain, each driver got very limited running. However, in the last 20 minutes, the track dried out and every driver put in a flying lap to understand the limits for the session later on. Notably, Latifi put his Williams ahead of even the championship protagonists, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.

The pace of the FW44 astonished the Ferrari driver, who himself put in a flying lap at the dying stages. As the chequered flag dropped, Leclerc asked his race engineer, Xavi on the radio about the time set by Latifi. Upon hearing a 1-second gap to the leader, the Monegasque could not figure out about the lost lap time around Hungaroring.

Recently, the Williams brought in a major upgrade package which was said to improve their pace. Car number 6 received this package last weekend and has delivered on the expectations. We can be in for a wet-qualifying later today which can really mix up the grid.

In wet conditions, it is more about the driver’s skill set than the qualifying pace of the car. Last year at Belgium GP, we saw George Russell grab a podium with exceptional performance in a qualifying session affected by rain. The 2022 season is arguably a do-die season for the 27-year-old. He is in his last year of the contract and is rumored to be replaced next season. Nevertheless, a strong performance just before the summer break can help him with contract negotiations. The raw pace at Budapest certainly has turned everyone’s head in the F1 world.

Presently, they are at the bottom of the constructor’s standings and a positive result can really help the team get their spirits up.
