The Canadian Grand Prix was a bittersweet race for Mercedes, as although they achieved their first podium all season, they could have done much better. Lewis Hamilton was fighting for the podium against George Russell and in the end, the younger driver took the lead. However, while Russell started from pole, he lost positions throughout the race and Hamilton progressed from P7 to P4. Although a 3-4 finish is the best result they achieved, the 7x world champion is not satisfied with the outcome.

Many rumors around the paddocks started circulating, saying that Toto Wolff had a hand in denying Hamilton the podium. Lewis Hamilton coming P4 in the W15 should have been a reason to celebrate but he was rather disappointed with the result.  Calling it the “Worst race of his career,” the Briton exclaimed he was unhappy about the development. Some started stating Mercedes was “sabotaging” the driver’s race as an anonymous email hit Formula 1 once again. Yet, the email caused a stir.

Just like what happened after Christian Horner was left off the hook by Red Bull GmbH’s investigation, an email from an anonymous source was sent to all the same recipients stating that Mercedes had deliberately sabotaged Lewis Hamilton’s race. The email allegedly, written by a Mercedes employee, accuses Toto Wolff of planning to sabotage Lewis Hamilton.

Toto Wolff went on record and said, “We know this is not from a member of our team, and we get an incredible amount of these emails, It is worrying, especially when someone talks about death and things like that in an email. That is why I said we need to investigate this fully and get the police involved. Online behavior like this has to stop.”

Frustrated at the situation he has been put in, Wolff explains, “People on their phones or computers cannot smear teams or drivers like this. I don’t know what kind of idiots there are.” Stating his relationship with Hamilton, he stated, “Lewis has been part of this team for 12 years, we are friends, and we trust each other. To all those lunatics out there, I would say: go see a psychiatrist.”

When this email was made public, Wolff took a stand and called the concerned authorities to trace where the emails came from. Mercedes wants to track the person who stirred the drama pot within the F1 scene. The team wants the emailer to face the complete ramifications of their actions.

Although the email recipients are the same as the ones sent when the Christian Horner incident took place, there is no saying that it is the same person. Wolff has denied that the person who sent the email is a Mercedes employee and the police will now investigate where the email came from.
