A man of emails and PowerPoint presentations, the future Mercedes driver has it all. It is well known that a budding George Russell emailed Toto Wolff his CV to get a seat in F1. Now, having secured a seat at the Silver Arrows itself, Russell revealed the secret to his entry into the sport.

The Briton played his cards right. A protege of the Mercedes Junior driver program, Russell already had a fair chance at the Williams seat. However, with his move, he stood out from the rest; he made his mark on Toto on day one.

In a recent interview, Russell talked about the glorious email that sent him down the trajectory he is on today. “I emailed Toto in December 2014, quite late in the evening, that I had sent him my résumé and that I would like to meet him. The worst that could have happened is that he doesn’t write back.” (Translated via Google News)

Having accepted the possibility that the Mercedes boss wouldn’t get back to him, Russell soon received a reply from Wolff, “Let’s make an appointment.”

Russell’s determination and sincere approach showed the qualities of a great driver in the making. The Briton commends his parents for giving him this forthright mindset.

“This mentality has helped me a lot on my way. My parents always said you had to work hard for your dreams. You only get back from life what you give. Formula 1 is so far away, you have to reach for the stars. If you don’t always give 120 percent, you have no chance.”

Russell reflects this advice in his time on the track – a 120 percent till the end; surely Toto Wolff will appreciate its continuum at Mercedes.

George Russell is all in for Mercedes

After three seasons as a Williams driver, George Russell will now partner a seven-time champion. Lewis Hamilton is a heavyweight of the sport, but Russell is up for the challenge.

Russell will continue to carry his candid attitude to Mercedes and is ready to put in the hard work required to earn his Silver Arrow.

“To drive for a team like Mercedes and alongside Lewis Hamilton – if I thought it was easy, I would be foolish. I’m happy, but I also know that things are only really getting started now. It’s going to be the greatest challenge I’ve ever faced.”

Racing with and against Lewis Hamilton is a daunting thought. However, Russell has one goal; a goal that Mercedes can help him achieve. “I know what it took to get here. Getting into Formula 1 is not the end. My goal is to become world champion.”
