Hundreds of millions of people across the world follow F1, and it carries a heavy influence on society. So, when the drivers use it as a platform to raise their voices to advocate for the causes that they believe in, they are heard, which causes a positive impact on individuals. And, rather than Lewis Hamilton, it is now his teammate, George Russell.
The Briton has spoken up and provided his voice for mental health, specifically men’s mental health. This is highly important for names such as Russell to speak on topics such as these, as mental health is often seen as a very taboo topic, even in the most progressive countries in the world.

In a video posted on Men’s Mental Health UK, the Mercedes driver said, “I’m really not sure why so many men still see mental health as a weakness. I think we have so much pride in men about being strong and any difficulties we try and push aside and power through. And I feel like this is where we need to try and turn this tide”

“And, you know, there’s nothing to be ashamed about talking about something, whether it’s a friend or member of your family or whether it’s seeking professional help, just to have an open, honest conversation. And I think so many people, so many men would be surprised about the results.”
When people share their experiences and struggles and help other, the world becomes a better place. With Russell making this important point, it is the best use of the platform and all the more reason for the FIA to lift the driver ban on raising societal concerns.

George Russell shares his own struggles with mental health
One might criticize Russell for speaking about men’s mental health without any substantial proof or anecdote. And so, before anyone would dismiss the driver, he himself spoke about his struggle while vouching for it.

He said, “The moment when I thought I need to seek some professional help was when I had a really difficult race. I had a crash. It was a very low point in my career, and I thought I could just pick myself up from that moment. And I was picking myself up. But we decided to speak with a professional.”
