George Russell will join the Mercedes AMG F1 team at the beginning of the 2022 season. The young British driver would replace Valtteri Bottas in the team. Russell might not have a problem in adjusting from Williams to Mercedes as he has already driven for the German team.

Russell subbed in for Lewis Hamilton at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix after the latter tested positive for COVID-19. The young Brit impressed everyone with his driving as he almost won the race. The outgoing Williams driver mentioned that he was ready to move to Mercedes at the end of the 2020 season.

I think two years at Williams would have been ideal: George Russell

Russell made his debut in 2019 with Williams and had a three-year contract with the team. He believes that a two-year contract would have been ideal for him.

“You can always learn something. Natural speed remains constant, but in all other respects, you can improve. You can interact more efficiently with the engineers, better tune the car, and work better with the tires.” said George.

“After my first season with Williams, I thought I was ready to move to a more competitive team. But now I feel like a more professional racer. I think two years at Williams would have been ideal.

I was ready to move up this season, but I had a three-year contract and there was nothing we could do about it,” said Russell.

The last time, Russell replaced Hamilton in the Mercedes, but now they will be teammates. It would be interesting to see if the young Brit can challenge and outperform the 7-time world champion through the course of the season.
