George Russell is one of the most underrated drivers in Formula One. The Williams’ driver scored his first podium last weekend at Spa where he placed P2. And now is being asked about when he will have his first victory. Russell simply gave a cheeky reply.

One rumor that has been circulating around the paddock has been George’s potential move to Mercedes. Knowing that George knew answering a question about his first win will stir up the drama.

George Russell knows his first win will come in year’s time

The Brit is in his last contract at Williams and has been tipped to drive for the Silver Arrows next year, replacing Valtteri Bottas. Knowing the power of a Mercedes he thinks he can grab his first win in F1. However, he also teases with the new regulations coming he might just have his first victory at the Grove-based outfit.

Speaking to Jenson Button from Sky Sports at Zandvoort on when he is likely to win his first F1 race, George said, “ooo… next year.”

On being told by Button that he just gave away his announcement, he replied, “I haven’t, I haven’t at all! Big regulations change next year, Williams 2013 finished ninth in the constructor’s, and the following year, they were fighting for victories and pole position.”

“To be honest, regardless next year I think it will be an exciting year for Formula One, and I am glad to be here as Formula One seems to be taking a good turn to greatness,” Russell concluded.

How long will Russell have to wait for Mercedes to come calling?

Ever since the one-off at Sakhir last year where he filled in for Lewis Hamilton. The Brit has shown exceptional form behind the wheel of a Mercedes. Now in 2021, his last year with Williams, Russell is hoping to get that second seat next to the 7-times world champion.

Coincidentally, Bottas has his contract running out as well with the Brackley-based squad. So it is no surprise that the Silver Arrows see this as the perfect opportunity to bring in Russell.
