The hit Netflix series ‘Drive to Survive’ has done wonders to popularize Formula 1 in the US. Innumerous fans of the docu-series found the world of F1 to be intriguing as they got a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in the paddocks during the race weekends. In this way, DTS has paved the path towards a healthy interaction between Hollywood and Formula 1. Thanks to this new era where F1 stars have become household names because they starred in the Netflix show, even more series and movies have been announced that will focus on the F1 life.
One such highly-anticipated Hollywood project with Mercedes racer Lewis Hamilton at its helm is currently in the works. The ‘F1’ movie will have Brad Pitt playing the protagonist Sonny Hayes, a racer for a fictional team called ‘Apex GP’. Shedding light on how he felt about making a movie with the biggest names in Hollywood, Lewis had once said, “Sitting with Brad [Pitt] and Joe [Kosinski, the director of ‘F1’] and just going through the plot and the plan, it was a pretty epic kind of experience.”
Now, Lewis Hamilton‘s Silver Arrows teammate George Russell wants to follow in his footsteps and live the Hollywood dream. While Lewis entered this glam business as a producer for the ‘F1’ movie, Russell wants to be the subject of one such flick. So, the 26-year-old mused about which actor might play him if a biopic is made on his life. He told the Sky Germany interviewers, “You really put me in a spot. Some people say I look like, Cillian Murphy without the hair. I do like Peaky Blinders, so I would say Cillian Murphy.”

Towards the beginning of 2024, George Russell and his celeb lookalike Cillian Murphy had indeed made the headlines for their uncanny resemblance. But how did George’s team, Mercedes, react to this?
Mercedes approves of George Russell’s Golden Globes moment
George Russell might be an excellent racer, but some fans came to know of his acting chops when he won the Golden Globes for Best Actor! Well, if this sounds strange to you, what actually happened is that Russell’s doppelgänger Cillian Murphy won the award for playing the titular role in his movie “Oppenheimer”. As the Irish actor sported a pair of shades that were very similar to the ones George Russell wore at one of his Grand Prix outings, the similarities between them were striking.

Hence, some fans started talking about how Cillian Murphy was present at the Golden Globes, and it almost looked like Russell was there at the prestigious event. Mercedes’s X page admin picked up this news and released his own meme on it. Posting a collage showing George Russell on one side and Cillian Murphy on the other, he gave a caption that said, “Best Actor at the 2024 Golden Globes.” However, the wink emoji at the end of this sentence revealed that the admin was only joking!
While George Russell might be dreaming about his own biopic right now, the truth is that the racer needs to dream of something else. The last race before the season break in Belgium saw him clinch a roaring victory that the FIA took back as they disqualified him. So, the Mercedes racer needs to avenge that mishap once the summer break gets over by scoring a Grand Prix win soon. Do you think he’ll be able to do it?
