Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished the Bahrain GP miles away from the winners. The worst part for the 8x champion team is that the team, Aston Martin, which finished seventh in the constructor’s championship last year, built a car that was ahead of the team in the qualifying and even grabbed a podium overtaking Mercedes. The stagnant developmental effort has now irked the 7x champion, who openly called out his team.

A team that nailed the turbo hybrid regulations so well is now witnessing an unprecedented downward curve in Mercedes’ developmental strides. They let the bouncing nightmare of a year off as the rookie mistake with the interpretation of new regulations. Adding to that, Hamilton was collecting data for the improvement of the machine, which took a toll on his performance. Sadly, the gap with the front runners still exists and Hamilton’s sacrifice hasn’t been taken into account. The said ignorance combined with arrogance has proved as the final tipping point for a man who always sees the glass half full.

As quoted f1maximaal.nl, he said, “Last year I told them about the problems with the car, Look, I’ve driven so many cars in my life, so I know what a car needs and I know what a car doesn’t need. And I think it’s really about responsibility. It’s about admitting and saying, yes, you know what, we didn’t listen to you, it’s not what it should be and we have to get to work”

He further stated, “We have to look at the balance through the corners, look at all the weaknesses and come together as a team, that’s what we have to do. We’re still multiple world champions, you know, but they didn’t get it right this time. They didn’t do well last year either, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do well in the future.”

The Englishman is not the only one disappointed with the team. The CEO and Team Principal, Toto Wolff, agree with the champion.

Toto Wolff echoes Lewis Hamilton’s disappointment

The team runs a non-conventional zeropod design. When they debuted the design last year, it made heads turn, but very soon it was understood that it was more of over-smartness as the results produced were the opposite of what was desired. And instead of rectifying it, the team still has proceeded with the same design philosophy, which is costing them dearly. But now the TP has stepped in to call for a need to regroup.

As quoted by ESPN, Toto Wolff said, “I don’t think this package is going to be competitive eventually. We gave it our best go over the winter and now we need to regroup, sit down with the engineers, who are totally not dogmatic about anything — there are no holy cows — and decide what is the development direction that we want to pursue in order to be competitive to win races.”

“It is not like last year when you score many podiums and eventually you get there, I’m sure that we can win races this season, but it’s the mid-and long-term that we need to look at and which decisions we need to make,” he added.
