All F1 fans are aware of how bad of a stint Mick Schumacher had with Haas. Following this, he was thrown off the team by boss Guenther Steiner. Steiner’s no-nonsense and harsh approach toward the German driver garnered a lot of attention. In Netflix’s Drive to Survive, Steiner even referred to Schumacher as a “Dead Horse”. To make things worse, his negative view of Schumacher was the only prominent one. However, a recent confession from an ex-team member at Haas is contradicting Steiner’s views.

As a result of Steiner’s public unabashed criticisms, Schumacher could not secure a driver’s seat for 2023. But luckily for Schumacher, Toto Wolff came in as a savior and signed him as a Reserve driver for Mercedes for the 2023 season. His impressive simulator work for the team earned him praise from both Mercedes drivers. He was even credited for the Spanish GP double podium. Adding to that list of compliments comes one from Mike Caulfield, Haas’ Head of Race Strategy.

Caulfield said on Twitter, “One of the best drivers I have worked with in terms of attitude and commitment. I’ve seen a lot of people say that he’s only in because of his name, but actually, because of his name, the demands are a lot more. I hope he gets a shot in a decent car at some point.”

The heap of praise that the young German is receiving is increasing. It’s not only Caulfield but also Toto Wolff who echoes the same views.

Wolff said, as quoted by Sky Sports, “I think teams are missing out, to be honest. I think he was burned last year. You need to give and provide an environment and framework that is different to every driver, we are all different human beings. And whoever gets him will have a very good pilot.”

The good part for Mick Schumacher is that though he has had a rough beginning to his F1 career, it is just the beginning. Only time will tell what kind of racer and person he grows into, given the right mentoring.
