Formula 1 has witnessed exponential growth in terms of viewership and brand value in the last few years. Sports analysts and experts often credit the Netflix series “Drive to survive” for the notable surge in F1 audiences. To put things in perspective, F1 has seen a 99% increase in social media engagement in 2020, which was the highest for any professional sport for the given year.

Ever since Liberty Media acquired F1 in 2017, they have attempted to make the sport more competitive and financially viable.

More recently, the 2021 F1 season invited a lot of traction, growing exponentially towards the end. As per the data from ESPN“963,000 viewers on ESPN2 watched Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton on the last lap to win the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship.”

The same data suggests that the 2021 season average was up 54 percent over the 2020 season and up 39 percent vs. the 2019 season average. The 2021 season saw six different Grand Prix winners, which added to the competitive spirit of the sport.

Formula 1 YouTube page saw record-breaking engagement

The biggest video platform YouTube has seen record engagement on the official F1 channel. The channel uploaded content like highlights of major Grand Prix and other clips starring your favorite F1 drivers. Apart from that, a series of videos titled, “Rise of the rookie” carves out the growth of F1 drivers since their early days.

In a recent update, the F1 YouTube channel, which amasses 6.9 million subscribers, has crossed over 4 billion views overall. The F1 channel is also the most subscribed in all motorsports. MotoGP stands second with 4.6 million members, followed by Nascar, which clocks 798,000 users currently, and the WRC, with Formula E, closes the top 5.

The most-watched video on the F1 channel is a 2019 clip titled, “10 most dramatic moments in the pits.” It has received 26 million clicks, while the second one is the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP highlights with 16 million to date. Considering the hype that race created, this video can easily surpass the former to become the most-watched video on the channel.

With the growing popularity of the sport, a quest to make it fair remains. The last lap debacle has made a dent in the image of the FIA and they will look to mend it in the future.

Meanwhile, the much-exciting 2022 season is right around the corner, fans are gearing up for another big title showdown. The pre-season testing is scheduled for February and the season will kick-start with the inaugural race in March.
