However, the pair had a fierce rivalry between them as fans saw the competition taking over their friendship. Nico Rosberg won the championship in 2016 by just five points and announced his retirement from the sport.
Nico Rosberg once explained that to beat Lewis Hamilton, one has to give everything. It required total dedication and perfection, otherwise one stands no chance. In an interview, Nico Rosberg pointed out what makes him among the greatest in the history of Formula 1.
Rosberg praised Hamilton for his persistence.

He said, “When we were young, we didn’t just duel on the track, but in every aspect of our lives. It’s phenomenal that he is still so tireless and still has the motivation to keep going and take the next step, after five, six, now seven titles.”

Rosberg pointed out that Hamilton’s motivation level is very impressive. He said, “He has already achieved so much, there is hardly any improvement. But that makes it all the more impressive and explains why he won not just one, but so many world championships.”
Rosberg recalled that he thought no one would break Schumacher’s record. He further said, “Besides Schumacher and Lewis there is also Senna, Fangio … To say which of them is the best is simply impossible. Everyone was unique in their own way, everyone was incredible.”
At the post-race interview at Istanbul, Hamilton said he still feels young. It is speculated that Hamilton will sign another contract with Mercedes; it must be frustrating for the opponents to realize that his domination could persist a few more seasons.
