Former Teammate Johnny Herbert Draws Parallels between Michael and Mick Schumacher

Mick Schumacher is riding on a high. These past ten days not only saw him become the F2 World Champion but also secure an F1 drive for the next season. Fans are already comparing him to his legendary father.

Johnny Herbert is in a perfect position to draw parallels between them. He drove alongside Michael Schumacher at Benetton Renault in 1995. The British driver has also met Mick and seen him up close. Comparing his qualities with his famous father, he said –

“He’s a lovely guy, very friendly, shy guy, very different to Michael who always had that confidence about him. This was even before he got to F1, Mick is much more quiet than his father, but he learns quickly.

“He’s learned brilliantly this season, he’s put himself in a brilliant position.”

Though the Ferrari Academy product doesn’t possess the natural talent levels of current F1 superstars, according to Herbert. It’s also important to note that Mick was struggling in his debut F2 season before mastering it this year.

So, there may be some credibility to what the three-time race winner says.

“He’s a slower learner than Max and Lewis; they seem to be able to just jump in a car, then bang there they are. Mick seems to take a bit longer, but he needs to be able to get out of the blocks in Formula 1® sort of on top of his game. But I think that sort of comes with confidence.

“I’m glad we’ve got a Schumacher back in an F1® seat.”

Can Mick Schumacher emulate his father?

It will be very difficult for him to emulate the scale of achievements of Michael Schumacher. However, he doesn’t really need to win a mammoth seven Driver’s Championships to create a legacy in F1. Even winning one would be a rare achievement. He would also be the third after the Rosberg and the Hill father-son duo to win a world championship if he conquers one.

Mick will race for Haas next season. The struggling-American outfit is fighting for its survival in F1. Hence, hiring the German will not only uplift their talent levels but also their overall profile. Hopefully, Mick can adjust to the pace of the pinnacle of motor racing. Podiums, wins and even championships may soon follow.
