In the aftermath of the controversial penalty imposed on Lando Norris at the Canadian Grand Prix, he has witnessed an unexpected show of support from a former F1 champion. As the outcry over the penalty grows louder, Damon Hill, known for his strong opinions, delivered a concise yet impactful statement, aligning himself with Norris and questioning the validity of the penalty.
Norris faced an unusual penalty for what appeared to be a minor infraction. During a Safety Car period, Norris inadvertently created a gap to Piastri, resulting in a five-second time penalty for “unsportsmanlike conduct.” F1 fans and experts were left perplexed by the severity of the punishment, considering Norris’s reputation as one of the sport’s most amicable figures. In a candid Instagram comment, Norris expressed his confusion, stating that he was unaware of the exact reason for the penalty and emphasizing that slowing down during a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) or a Safety Car (SC) is a common practice.

Damon Hill seized upon the perplexing nature of the penalty. Hill took to his Instagram story, sharing Norris’s comment saying “I am not unsportsmanlike” posted by F1 and appending a six-word statement that cut straight to the heart of the matter: “It’s an insult, not a penalty.”

With these hard-hitting words, Hill underscored the growing sentiment among fans and experts that the penalty handed to Norris was disproportionate and lacked justification. Hill’s succinct statement reignites the debate surrounding the penalty and shines a spotlight on the inconsistencies and subjective nature of such decisions.
While Lando Norris’s penalty controversy grabs headlines, McLaren‘s performance as a team remains a topic of discussion. The 2023 season has seen McLaren battling it out with the bottom four teams on the grid, despite showing commendable qualifying performances. Piastri stated, “We’re looking forward to the upgrades that will come soon. Hopefully, they’ll be faster… I think we’re having our best days at the moment, probably at the top of the midfield, and we need to get out of that midfield and focus on the top four teams. So yes, I’m looking forward to it.” The young driver’s optimism fuels the anticipation surrounding McLaren’s B-spec car, set to bring substantial performance upgrades to the team.
