From pulling off the last to first recovery to crashing into the walls of Sainte Devote. Sergio Perez has been on a roller coaster of his own in the past few years. Red Bull has been extremely pleased with his contributions to their triumphs since 2021. But at times, things have gone south pretty drastically for the Mexican driver. The 2023 Monaco GP was a similar instance and pretty poetic considering Checo won in the principality just a year ago. Regardless amid all criticism, Perez is looking to bounce back & has outlined his plans.

After his qualifying crash in Monaco, many pounced on Checo’s credentials & ability to fight Max Verstappen for the F1 title. Even Red Bull taskmaster Helmut Marko cited how Perez may be overthinking about the championship. Considering Verstappen has been in a league of his own, Sergio will always be having an uphill task to beat him. Still, he feels that his title challenge can be boosted with a turnaround & knows what needs to be done.

According to Soymotor, Perez said in a Red Bull racing press release, I know what I need to do to get back to the shape I’m capable of being in and as a team we know how to get the car into a window where I’ll perform best.” Given Checo has been in F1 for more than a decade, he understands how to work with the team to avoid repeated blunders like Monaco.

He further added, “To get through moments like this, it’s more important than ever to work on team. We will all be supporting each other to fight for the win in Canada. I have a fantastic car and it is always exciting to be behind the wheel. I must be very consistent in Montreal and have a full weekend.”

Perez’s aim for the championship may seem a tad bit ambitious. Still, he has done a great job of matching Verstappen on the odd occasion so far in 2023. So, one never knows if the Mexican can get a rich vein of form with consistency, the title fight may be on!

Is it realistic for Sergio Perez hoping to Beat Max Verstappen for the 2023 Title?

If Sergio Perez is a 2nd driver at Red Bull, he is certainly doing the ideal job barring a few mistakes. Being there when Max Verstappen gets bogged down due to any issue, taking wins & podiums – the ideal Wingman. Although, his renewed vigor in 2023 & the absence of any other challenger for the world title is boosting Perez for his championship dream.

It may seem quite unrealistic given how inconsistent Perez’s peak performance is relative to Verstappen. Regardless, if Checo can repeat what he did in Baku & Jeddah at multiple upcoming races, things can turn around. Plus, the Mexican also needs to capitalize on the remaining street track races to hit back at Max’s championship lead.

Several people have compared Perez to Nico Rosberg as well. How the latter beat Lewis Hamilton narrowly in their 3rd & final season together at Mercedes. Now, Checo may not want to create Nico & Lewis-like animosity with Max. However, he would want to produce such a miracle to shut down his critics & remove that #2 driver label.

With a long season ahead, Sergio Perez will look to renew his title challenge quickly to get under Verstappen’s skin. Whether this boils over the seething tension between the Red Bull drivers, time will tell. Though Checo has a mountainous task if he still wishes to topple Max for the 2023 title!
