We are all aware of the unforgiving nature of the crown jewel of Formula 1. In fact, we witnessed just that during the qualifying session, as even the king of the streets had to bow down and hang his head in shame. Sergio Perez put his RB19 in the barriers in the first part of the qualifying session after an unforced error. Starting 20th on the narrow streets of Monaco will make overtaking and inadvertently life for Perez extremely difficult. However, most would assume with the superiority of the RB19, Perez will be back fighting for points in no time. Most would assume that, but not Perez, much to his disgust and pleasure for Max Verstappen.
Perez has always been extremely vocal about his desire to challenge his teammate Verstappen for the championship. Moreover, he has been holding his own with two race wins and a close battle in the points table. Although starting from the back, the Red Bull man will have an uphill battle in front of him to keep the pressure on. This is exactly why, while speaking to the media, including Soy Motor Perez put up a defeated front.
“It’s a hard blow for me, very hard, I’m going to lose a lot of points in this race. It’s going to be a nightmare to start from the last position. It’s going to be really difficult to progress in any way tomorrow. I expect a very difficult race because if we do anything with the strategy, people are going to protect themselves and you’ll end up in the same position,” Perez confessed.

A good starting position on Monaco is a battle half-won. However, the inverse of this scenario is also true and Perez is well aware. This inconsistency is what might cost him in the long run. This is exactly what Red Bull’s advisor Helmut Marko also pointed out.

Like most qualifying sessions, in the short term, the margin between a champion and any driver on the grid is minuscule. However, the margins amplify when we look at the bigger picture. The defining factor in this change is consistency. Consistency over prolonged periods is what sets a world champion and your average driver on the grid apart.
According to Marko, this is exactly where Perez is lacking as he is fretting to take the fight to Verstappen. This is exactly why Perez would agree with Marko’s recent comments as well. Marko said, “If you have such a good car, you can’t fly out in Q1. That was a stupid mistake on his part. Perhaps he was thinking too much about the championship.”
