In a surprising turn of events, Max Verstappen, the reigning three-time World Champion in Formula 1, is set to welcome a new performance coach for the upcoming 2024 season. The seasoned Bradley Scanes, who has been alongside the Red Bull driver for the past eight years, is stepping down from his role, citing a desire to spend more time with family and friends.

However, Verstappen, known for his swift decision-making both on and off the track, has wasted no time in securing a replacement. Rupert Manwaring, previously the performance coach for Carlos Sainz, is poised to step into the critical role. This move not only signifies a significant change in Verstappen’s support team but also sparks curiosity about the dynamics between Manwaring and Sainz and the potential impact on Verstappen’s performance.

Rupert Manwaring’s name may be new to some Formula 1 enthusiasts, but his influence has been quietly shaping the career of Carlos Sainz. Having embarked on the Formula 1 journey with Sainz at Toro Rosso in 2015, Manwaring has been more than a performance coach; he has been a confidant, strategist, and a crucial part of Sainz’s support system.

In a 2020 interview with Autosport, Manwaring provided insights into his multifaceted role, emphasizing the importance of ensuring Sainz’s mental and physical preparedness for every race. Here’s a short excerpt from that interview. “I make sure that he’s as prepared as he can be mentally and physically for every time he needs to step in the car. It’s quite a broad role. It obviously includes things like his physical training, nutrition, sports therapy and making sure that he’s fit. But it’s also managing as best as possible any niggles he may be having at the time. I’m there as a bit of a right hand man if you like.”

Verstappen’s decision to bring in Rupert Manwaring underscores the meticulous approach the Dutch driver takes towards his career. With an expanding F1 calendar, now boasting a record 24 races, the role of a performance coach becomes increasingly pivotal.

The transition from supporting Sainz to Verstappen is undoubtedly a noteworthy shift for Rupert Manwaring.
