Just imagine, in a sport driven by speed, precision, and strategy, the influence of something as elusive as a “curse” may sound far-fetched. However, when the stakes are high, even a hint of superstition can send ripples. A 2016 F1 Champion turned commentator has inadvertently become a harbinger of bad luck in the world of F1. Just when we thought Carlos Sainz might taste victory at the 2023 Italian GP, the notorious “Rosberg Curse” struck, demolishing dreams and fueling memes. As we anticipate the upcoming Singapore GP with bated breath, Nico Rosberg himself announces his next “target.”
Why do drivers and teams seem to struggle right after receiving Rosberg’s support? Could there be more than just random misfortune at play? The “Rosberg Curse” has fans and insiders alike scratching their heads. Before the Italian GP, Rosberg openly backed Max Verstappen for the pole. However, Carlos Sainz outclassed the Red Bull driver in Q3. He then showered his support on Ferrari, making their subsequent defeat to Verstappen and Red Bull even more perplexing. Notably, this isn’t a one-off event; earlier this season, Rosberg’s social media interactions led to setbacks for Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg has developed a peculiar reputation for inadvertently jinxing drivers and teams he shows support for. Is it coincidence, or is the ‘curse’ becoming an unsettling pattern?

In a recent Sky Sports F1 podcast, Nico Rosberg addressed the “curse” phenomenon, albeit light-heartedly. Responding to a fan’s tweet that requested a selfie with Max Verstappen before the Singapore GP, Rosberg said, “This is the curse thing. I even tried this weekend. I tried to do a neutral background and I thought I don’t wanna cause any problems here. Forza Ferrari because the whole weekend was about that and all of us are wishing for Ferrari to win. So I thought, but maybe I am not even allowed to do that then apparently. But that will be a bit aggressive if I then take a picture with Max before a race; that will not be cool. But I will do that anyway.” So, not only did Rosberg acknowledge the “curse,” he also brazenly signaled that Verstappen might be the next on his list.

At the Singapore circuit, all eyes will be on Max Verstappen, aiming for a history-making 11th straight win. With Rosberg himself acknowledging and participating in the “curse,” the Singapore GP is set to be a race where superstition meets destiny. While Nico Rosberg seems ready to unleash his so-called “curse” on Max Verstappen, it’s noteworthy that he recently took an opposing stance to Toto Wolff regarding Verstappen’s record-breaking success.

Just days ago, Nico Rosberg found himself at odds with his former team boss. Wolff dismissed Verstappen’s 10th consecutive win at the Italian GP as mere “Wikipedia” material, a comment that raised eyebrows and ruffled feathers within the F1 community.
Rosberg, taking a stance diametrically opposed to Wolff, stated, “We all care about records, of course. And Max, who always says ‘no, I don’t care about 10 races,’ puts both of his hands up and points to the world that that’s 10 in a row.” Rosberg further criticized Wolff’s lack of graciousness, suggesting that the Mercedes boss was perhaps letting his team’s recent struggles tint his judgment.
