Formula 1 Twitter can be oddly partisan. It’s a fact. Whether it be the Lewis Hamilton Army going against the Orange Army or even Lando “No Filter” Norris getting flak for saying something mildly controversial—there will always be a side that’s picked. And this time, someone from the Carlos Sainz camp has become the center of F1 Twitter’s interest. Although his father, Carlos Sainz Sr., has received a lot of backlash for his controlling nature over Sainz Jr.’s racing career, it’s his mother, Reyes Vázquez De Castro, who’s been making headlines (for the wrong reasons).
The Italian GP saw Sainz outperforming his teammate (and Ferrari’s golden boy) Charles Leclerc throughout the weekend. At Ferrari’s home race, Sainz was the driver to give the Tifosi what they’d hoped for—a pole position in Monza! Edging Leclerc in P3 out by just 0.067s, a Twitter post about the results instigated the hate Mamma Sainz is receiving.
Mamma Sainz is losing the “honor” F1 Twitter had for her

Before Reyes Vázquez De Castro stirred controversy on Twitter, another F1 mom was (and is) taking Twitter by storm (in a good way). Who was it? Nicole Piastri—Oscar Piastri’s mother. She became a Twitter sensation after taking a subtle dig at her son’s former team, Alpine. During the Belgian GP, the Enstone team announced the sacking of Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer. The same weekend, Piastri got his first top-three finish in F1. Mamma Piastri posted pictures of both these things and wrote, “the universe works in mysterious ways.”

This and her active engagement with her son’s Twitter updates and results made her an F1 Twitter star. When Sainz’s mother did something similar—without actually posting anything—she became an F1 Twitter enemy. But what did she do? A Twitterati posted a tweet after Sainz’s pole, writing, “You know what Carlos has that Leclerc never will? The honor. Congratulations, Carlos, today you have shut up a lot of mouths.” [Translated by Google] Another user posted a screenshot of Reyes’ likes page, which showed that she’d liked this tweet, writing, “Sainz own mother @ReyesVdeC is liking tweets saying that Charles doesn’t have honor… disgusting.”
Tensions were already high at Ferrari. Despite Leclerc saying that he had fun fighting Sainz in the final stages of the Italian GP (and would go for beers with him), their relationship isn’t at its best. It has been evident on several occasions this season, with team orders favoring Leclerc and qualifying overtakes by Sainz. And now, Sainz’s mother’s actions could very well affect team dynamics further. While this was the first time Reyes’ social media actions had something to do with Sainz’s racing career, Mamma Sainz also raised eyebrows after interactions with someone from Sainz’s past.

A relationship between Carlos Sainz and Isa Hernaez that started in 2017 came to an abrupt end earlier this year—when all everyone was expecting to hear were wedding bells. Instead, one of F1’s ‘It’ couples announced their breakup, breaking many Carlos-and-Isa-shipper hearts. A few months after the split, though, the Ferrari driver started dating Scottish model Rebecca Donaldson. Since then, the pair have been inseparable. But Mamma Sainz has been inseparable (at least, virtually) with Isa.

Despite her son’s new love interest, Reyes hasn’t stopped following Isa on Instagram. Not just that, Mamma Sainz has also been interacting with Isa’s posts, liking her pictures. This shows that even though Isa and Carlos are no longer together, she’s still a part of the Sainz family, having been around them for almost seven years. While her and Carlos’ relationship might’ve changed, it looks like Mamma Sainz has no intention of cutting her ties with her son’s former lover.
