Ferrari will complete 70 years of racing excellence in the United States in the upcoming Miami Grand Prix. And to celebrate the occasion, team principal, Frederic Vasseur has decided to bring a one-off special livery with shades of blue to complement the signature scarlet red color of the Italian manufacturer, which will be revealed in Florida ahead of the Miami GP. But why Blue?
Blue is not just a random choice, the color holds historical significance for the Prancing Horse. In 1964, Ferrari made a breakthrough in the United States with a special white and blue livery that was used in the final two races of that season. What’s interesting is that Ferrari will bring two different shades of blue to the car.
The SF-24 will reintroduce Azzurro La Plata, a light blue shade that is also the national racing color of Argentina. This color was previously used by legendary drivers like Alberto Ascari, John Surtees, Lorenzo Bandini, Ludovico Scarfiotti, and Chris Amon, who had this shade of blue on their jerseys and helmets. It was also seen in the overall racing of Niki Lauda in his first-ever season with the Scuderia.

The second shade will be the Azzurro Dino, a darker hue of blue that was last seen in 1974 on the race suits of drivers like Clay Regazzoni and Arturo Merzario. Interestingly, the color blue was also commonly used for the uniforms of the employees who worked at the Maranello factory back in the day, as evident from historical photographs.
While the exact date for the launch of the new livery remains unclear, a series of events celebrating Ferrari’s legacy will begin on April 28 and continue until the start of the Miami Grand Prix. However, this isn’t the first time Ferrari has done something like this. They have introduced special liveries on many occasions in the past to celebrate the achievements of special milestones.
A quick glimpse into Ferrari’s past special liveries
Even as recent as last year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, Ferrari introduced white on the car’s livery and on the firesuits of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to celebrate their look from the 1970s, when Vegas used to be on the calendar.

A few races back in last year’s Italian Grand Prix, Ferrari introduced special yellow-colored V stripes added to the nose cone and engine cover to pay tribute to the victory earlier in the year by Ferrari’s 499P Hypercar at the World Endurance Championship event, which notably coincided with the 100th anniversary of Le Mans. The overalls and helmets for Leclerc and Carlos Sainz had also been updated for the event with Yellow.
Back in 2020, at the Tuscan Grand Prix, Ferrari introduced a burgundy livery in honor of the very first color used on a Ferrari racing car to celebrate its 1000th race. All these special liveries are reminders of the illustrious history of the Italian manufacturer in the realm of motorsport. And there is still a long way to go for the longest-standing team in the history of Formula 1.
