The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits. Carlos Sainz went outside the limit of his car during a stupid stunt at Albert Park, causing mayhem toward the end of the race. However, the worst adversary from this crash was his fellow Spaniard, Fernando Alonso. The two-time world champion’s race was somehow saved by the FIA with Sainz left pleading to the race directors and stewards. The wannabe heroics of Sainz have caused a stir in F1 fans, leaving them with a lot to say. What have the fans said about Carlos Sainz and his little stunt?
Kevin Magnussen retired on Lap 54 of the Australian GP. The Danish racing driver hit the wall on the outside after coming out of turns 1 and 2 with a little extra speed and punting his rear right tire into the wall. The suspension of the Haas was broken, with the tire flying off into the distance. Because of this crash, a full safety car emerged, which later established a Red Flag on Lap 55.

After clearing up the debris, the race was restarted, but what was about to come could not be imagined. With only 2 laps left, everyone bolted a set of soft tires. Everyone went away well at the restart, but mayhem awaited turn 1. Carlos Sainz started P4 with Fernando Alonso in P3 above him. Going into turn 1, Sainz could not slow down his car enough and went ahead and tagged his fellow Spaniard who was on the outside of him. This sent Alonso into a spin, removing him from the podium places with suspicion of rear suspension damage.
However, Alonso was able to continue the race and finished P3 in an exciting turn of events. Fans were quick to react to the Sainz attack on Fernando Alonso, criticizing the Ferrari driver’s stupid move on the inside. Whereas, Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin are being praised for surviving the punt from Sainz.
Fans react to Carlos Sainz’s stunt into turn 1
Fans have taken to Twitter to react to Carlos Sainz‘s amateur move on Alonso into turn 1. Some people went back in time, suggesting Ferrari is still trying to screw over Alonso after the Spaniard left the Italian team 9 years back. Many fans suggested that Sainz is not Ferrari material and should go back to a B-tier team, whereas some asked to award a penalty to Sainz which he eventually did as race control awarded him a 5-second time penalty for causing a collision. Here’s how the fans reacted:

Many praised Aston Martin for building a very strong car capable of taking hits that strong and still managing to finish the race.

And then some criticized FIA and race control for electing a Red Flag for the Magnussen crash, calling the FIA a joke and mentioning that FIA did it just for the rating and viewership.
It is amazing that is has been six years since than and FIA is still a joke…There should have never been a red flag at lap 55 at first and after that everything is just a constructed utter mess, this not racing anymore.

Carlos Sainz’s lunge down the inside was unnecessary and that too won the restart. However, he got what he deserved when FIA slapped him with a 5-second penalty.
