Ferrari Holds Its Cards Close Despite Ovation From F1 Paddock – “Today We Are at the Top but…”

Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto has admitted that it will take a few races to understand which team will be the fastest on the grid. The 2022 F1 season brings in a new set of regulations with the aim of ‘closer racing’ this year. Currently, teams are undergoing pre-season testing in Bahrain ahead of the season opener next week.

Amid all the speculation regarding the performance and design of the new cars, Binotto believes that the winner of the Bahrain Grand Prix, will not set a benchmark for the entire season. However, he adds that the teams will take 3-4 races to settle into the new changes for the season. The Ferrari boss said, “We will need 3-4 races to understand the potential of everyone and next weekend’s results will not be definitive.”

The Italian added, “We are more ready to fight than last year. We always said that 2022 was an opportunity. Today we are at the top, but then we have to explain and tell the story of this day, with the tyres and the performance of others. But we are not far off.”

Ferrari have been quick and reliable in both pre-season testings in Barcelona and Bahrain. With Red Bull and Mercedes fighting for the Championship, the Scuderia will have a big chance of joining this race.

Will Mercedes and Red Bull Stay Ahead of Binotto’s Ferrari

Despite Ferrari drastically improving in pre-season, the big guns have showed some serious pace in the early days. Mercedes’ W13 implemented a minimized sidepods design, which was a talking point on Day 2 in Bahrain. Hamilton, who will team up with George Russell, will also look to grab his 8th driver’s title and his team’s 9th constructor’s title.

Meanwhile, Red Bull have also stayed among the fastest lap timings with Verstappen continuing his brilliance from 2021. Last season, the Bulls claimed their first Drivers’ title since 2013, while failing out on the Constructors’ yet again.

Both teams will face stiff competition from Ferrari this season. McLaren, on the other hand, suffered from a brake issue in Bahrain and could find it hard to challenge the big guns. However, the season begins with an even playing field with everything on the line in 2022.
