It was another mixed-race for the Ferrari F1 team in the 2022 season. They won their second consecutive race last weekend, this time courtesy of Charles Leclerc. But once again, their F1-75 was plagued by reliability concerns as Carlos Sainz retired from the race after an engine failure.

The Italian could have had another 1-2 as Sainz was chasing after Verstappen before his engine gave up on him. Yet team principal Mattia Binotto believes that the team is still in contention for both drivers’ and constructors’ championships in the 2022 season.

“It is obvious that we believe in the two World Championships: we are a fierce team from every point of view: technical, riders, men at pit stops,” said Binotto for the team. [Translated by Google]

He also gave a reason why the team might be experiencing so many engine failures this season. “We pushed hard on performance knowing that the power units would be frozen until 2026. I am confident also thinking about the next seasons,” said the Ferrari team boss.

But the Italian mentioned that the problems with the car do worry him while looking at things in the long term.

He pointed out that he believes they can overcome any hurdle and find solutions. But the reliability might be an important factor if they fail to win both championships this season.

“These are problems that are worrying for the next races. Not in the medium-term because I am convinced that as a team we will be able to solve them. We have a very performing engine and this gives me hope for the future when we have found a way to make it solid as well,” said the Italian.

The team needs to work out their problems as the first half of the season is already over. They cannot afford to fall into the same pits in the second half of the season if want to keep challenging for the titles.
