2021 has certainly been a season of mixed fortunes for the 2007 F1 world champions, Ferrari. The Scuderia did suffer an unfortunate performance dip in 2020, but the revival phase has been quite extraordinary. Both drivers have chipped in with frequent points and podiums to help the team snatch their first top 3 constructors’ finish since 2019.
Of course, the Monza engine update indeed stands tall as one of the primary reasons behind the resurgence of Ferrari. Hence, from a spectator’s perspective, it might look like Ferrari opted to bring in the update to challenge McLaren.
However, that is not the case, according to Ferrari F1 boss, Mattia Binotto. The Italian reckoned that the development revolving around SF21 ended within an initial couple of race weekends of this season. And since then, the entire Ferrari crew have had their eyes on the 2022 project.

“We have never actually developed the current car. Just a couple of new features at the beginning of the season, that’s all… except the power unit later on,” Binotto said.
“But the power unit was with a view to 2022, so all our efforts since the beginning of our season have always been on the 2022 car and we have never compromised it.”
Binotto happy with P3 in the constructor’s championship
Despite being one of the most successful teams in F1 history, Binotto sounded quite relieved with Ferrari seeing off the season in P3.
“Obviously the championship is not over yet. There are two races left and we are really focused on trying to do our best in the last two. But without a doubt, if I look at where we were last year, we have made the most of the current regulations,” he said.

“Overall, the team has made a lot of progress. I’m happy because third position is a great result. of that effort,” Binotto concluded.
Overall, considering the recent happenings, it almost looks like Ferrari could be a serious contender for the 2022 championship title.
