In the high-octane world of Formula 1, where engineers and drivers collaborate to push the limits of speed and technology, the name Adrian Newey stands out as a legendary figure. As the mastermind behind ten constructors’ world championships, Newey’s influence on the sport has been nothing short of transformative. Although his illustrious career did not intersect directly with that of two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, the Spanish driver expresses his gratitude for sharing the Formula 1 stage with the iconic designer.

In a recent interview, Alonso reflects on his journey through Formula 1 and expresses his admiration for the man responsible for the cars that clinched numerous championships for his rivals. “He is a legend in this sport,” Alonso declares with a touch of reverence. Despite never having the opportunity to collaborate directly with Newey, Alonso considers himself fortunate to have raced during the same era as the design virtuoso.

Adrian Newey, the brilliant mind behind the success of Red Bull Racing, recently shared his “emotional regrets” about not working directly with two of the sport’s biggest names, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Newey, who started his F1 career in March and enjoyed success with Williams and McLaren before joining Red Bull, expressed a sense of longing for a collaboration that never materialized. “It would have been great to work with Fernando and Lewis. But it never happened. Sometimes it’s just circumstances, that’s life,” Newey lamented on the Beyond the Grid podcast.

Alonso reciprocates the sentiment, acknowledging the near misses in their potential collaborations. “We’ve been close to working together a few times and talked about it,” Alonso reveals, providing a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes dynamics of Formula 1 negotiations. Despite the missed opportunities, Alonso expresses his appreciation for Newey’s character, both professionally and personally.

“I remember when he published a book in Spain a few years ago, I had the privilege of writing the first page, the prologue,” Alonso reminisces. It’s evident that beyond the racetrack, there exists mutual respect and camaraderie between the two, transcending the boundaries of competition.

While Alonso never joined forces with Red Bull, the team where Newey achieved significant success in the latter part of his career, the Spanish driver remains grateful for the indirect collaboration. “Even though we never worked together, I’m glad that I’m living and racing in this time – in the Adrian Newey Formula 1-built cars,” Alonso states.

Despite the huge respect these two share, it is obvious that Adrian Newey and his cars were the reasons Alonso didn’t win more championships.

Alonso’s appreciation for Newey does seem paradoxical. Especially when you consider that Newey’s cars played a role in denying the Spaniard three world championship titles during his tenure at Ferrari. When confronted with this irony, Alonso responds with a good-natured laugh, offering a unique perspective. “He is responsible for the fact that 19 drivers did not win a championship for more than two decades!” Alonso quips.

Looking ahead, Alonso expresses a desire to work with the 64-year-old design maestro again in the future. Until that day arrives, he finds solace in privately driving the Aston Martin Valkyrie, a project in which Newey played a pivotal role. “Maybe I’ll feel something when I get in,” Alonso laughs.
