Fernando Alonso is making a comeback to Formula 1 in 2021, driving for Renault. The 39-year-old is scheduled to drive next year, but is already back at the paddock, helping the team give feedback on the cars.
In an interview with Sky F1 at Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, the double world champion spoke about the aims he has set for both himself and the team.

Alonso decided to part ways from Formula 1 after completing his stint with McLaren at the end of 2018. Since then, he has raced at the World Endurance Championship, 24 hours Le Mans, Indianapolis 500, and the Dakar Rally.
Alonso expects to be on top of his racing skills in 2021. However, he acknowledges that after two years break from F1, it could be a struggle. “I’m aware of the challenge that maybe I face in the first couple of races,” he said.
“Not only on pure speed but also on procedures, steering wheel commands, things that are new for me and could take some time. I’m aware that I could struggle a little bit,” he further added.
Alonso expressed that he wants to stay positive and not think that the struggles will affect his return.

Alonso on his comeback to Renault

Alonso clarified that he needed the break and that the last two years have made him more patient and mature. He also mentioned that he was frequently linked with Formula 1 teams for a long time before the announcement.
He said, “I talked to a few teams but Renault was always the preferred choice.” Their talks got serious after Daniel Ricciardo announced his surprise decision to join McLaren in 2021.
Alonso explained his reasons for choosing Renault. “One, in terms of expectations and building something from the midfield to the top, it was very attractive, very appealing. And secondly, because I know everyone in this team. I know the passion for racing.”

The Spaniard has won while racing for Renault before and also won his two world championships with them in 2005 and 2006. He will hope to continue his form with Renault. Hopefully, help the team and himself start fighting for podium finishes.
