Ever since Lewis Hamilton joined McLaren to partner up with Fernando Alonso in his rookie season, they haven’t seen eye to eye. Alonso came at the back of two back-to-back championship wins. However, the team did not stop Hamilton from fighting him on the track. That drove a wedge between the two and, to this day, they haven’t completely mended their differences. But it seems like the Spaniard is ready to put the past behind him and has made a heartfelt appeal. An appeal that will neither please his current team boss Lawrence Stroll, nor his son Lance.

Alonso has been nothing but excited since his arrival at Aston Martin. He lauded the team’s owner’s vision to excel and his hunger to compete for the championship. Despite Lance not showing much improvement in the last few years, he praised him as well. He went as far as talking about seeing a future world champion in him. Despite that, in a recent interview, he expressed his desire to be Hamilton’s teammate once again, a move that will either require Lance to be sacked or him to move out and join Mercedes.

Speaking with Daily Mail, Alonso said, “It would be nice to end our careers together. I’d love that.”

The comment comes as a surprise because neither he nor Lewis has been too kind to each other despite being a part of different teams all these years since their paths went different ways after the 2007 season.

But times have changed now. Both drivers have matured enough to understand each other and even appreciate each other’s achievements. In fact, Alonso believes that even the rift between them was a result of bad management at McLaren.

Fernando Alonso blames Ron Dennis for rivalry with Lewis Hamilton

In 2007, McLaren had the pace, as well as talented drivers, to give Ferrari a run for their money. That is exactly what they did, as both their drivers missed out on the championship by just one point behind Kimi Raikkonen. However, the decision to not prioritize either driver’s results over the other proved to be costly.

Later in the interview, Fernando recalled, “The situation that season was not well-managed by our bosses. We were young, we were immature. We were many of the things we are not now, and we needed help from the management that we didn’t get.”

“I couldn’t continue with McLaren. It was a team with eyes totally one side of the garage. As Ron (Dennis, team principal) said after the penultimate race in China, ‘Our race isn’t with (Ferrari’s Felipe) Massa, it is with Fernando’. When your team says that, you cannot continue. But you learn in a career.”
