Spain’s home hero Fernando Alonso jumped several places as he finally finished in points at the Spanish Grand Prix. After a few tough results despite incredible effort, Alonso and Alpine F1’s double points finish was a good end result.

Qualifying was a nightmare for the Spaniard as he was out in Q1. A queue of traffic marred the 40-year-old’s out lap as he couldn’t make the cut to Q2.

After starting at the back of the grid, Alonso had his work cut out for him. The Alpine driver made a tremendous drive in a race that was already beginning to turn tricky. By lap 7, Alonso muscled his way past the likes of Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo and Williams. He was already P13 and managed to escape any problems at all.

Partner Andrea Schlager congratulates Fernando Alonso on the points finish

Alonso‘s partner, Andrea Schlager, recently congratulated the Spanish driver on his run. The TV presenter posted an Instagram story with the driver and wrote, “Extremely proud of this guy…from last position to P9 with circumstances far from perfect. We keep you as driver at home please.”

The couple recently confirmed their relationship via social media, where they post about each other regularly. On the other hand, this will particularly be a proud moment for the Spanish crowd. After starting P20, Alonso managed to gain 11 positions. In fact, Carlos Sainz, though spun, also finished P4 in the race, treating the home crowd with another top 10 finish.

Alonso surprised with the top 10 finish

Understandably, the 40-year-old sounded satisfied with his job in a post race interview. He said, “I think it was a mega race for us today. Because we started last. We changed the engine last night in a way, even sacrifice a little bit this weekend because we knew that it was difficult to overtake here in Barcelona. And then we finished in the points.”

Calling it the “magic of motorsport” the results arguably surprised Fernando himself, especially on a track that is widely considered a tough one to overtake.
