Although his former teammate, Fernando Alonso isn’t the biggest Lewis Hamilton fan. Although the pair have immense respect for each other, Alonso has been vocal about supporting Max Verstappen in the 2021 championship. Further, the Spaniard recently stated that Hamilton has failed to impress him anymore.

After Kimi Raikkonen’s exit from F1, Alonso will take over as the most experienced driver on the grid; following him, is Hamilton. In this context, Alonso isn’t surprised that Hamilton finds himself next on the list.

“In Formula One you are always motivated. If you win the championship, the next year you completely reset, start from zero and you will never get tired of success so I don’t think that is a strength for Lewis.” Thus, Hamilton’s victories over the last 14 years are no longer a sign of steadfastness.

Alonso explained, “Lewis has so many strengths but it is not impressive to keep winning–that is quite easy.” While F1 victories had become almost customary to the champion, this season, things had changed. Regardless, Alonso stays steely in his perception of Hamilton.

Fernando Alonso predicts nature of Russell- Hamilton partnership

As George Russell makes his way to Mercedes next season, it’s easy to assume that, as Russell’s fan, Alonso will fall back on his patterns of allegiance. One mustn’t forget that the Alpine driver felt bad for pushing Russell out of the points in Austria. Further, a good ol’ helmet swap gave Alonso the chance to call Russell a “future world champ”.

However, he believes Lewis will continue to dominate despite having a younger teammate. “In those two years when I watched the races, what George achieved with Williams– even if we was not in the headlights– was very impressive. But in terms of beating Lewis, I don’t know how it will work.”

Although Alonso isn’t Hamilton’s biggest fan, it would be foolish to brush aside his credentials. Alonso added, “Even if George has been impressive, Lewis is the legend; a great champion and it is never going to be easy to beat him. It doesn’t matter how talented you are.”

Therefore, even if Alonso is unimpressed by Hamilton’s longevity in the sport, he also knows that Lewis’ future holds many victories. A lot of mixed feelings to unpack, but they are understandable.
