Fernando Alonso Names the Biggest Regret of His Formula 1 Career: “If I Could Change Something…”

22 years and counting, the 42-year-old Fernando Alonso is showing no signs of stopping or slowing down. The Spaniard has achieved a lot and won it all in the world of motorsport. In fact, his accolades aren’t just limited to Formula 1. He has won the Indy500 and the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. Having won it all, there is still a desire to race and Alonso is showcasing that every weekend. However, in these 22 years of racing, there is only one regret in Alonso’s life.

The Spaniard has changed a plethora of teams during his time in the premier class. Although most of his near misses are spread across various teams, the Spaniard regrets losing out on the championship with Ferrari the most. The Aston Martin man finished runner-up by just four and three points in the 2010 and 2012 championship seasons, respectively.

Speaking to Marca, as quoted by Motorsport-Total, the Spaniard revealed not winning the championship donning the Ferrari reds is still the biggest regret of his career.

“If I could change something in my career, I would like to become world champion with Ferrari,” said the Spaniard. “We may have had the weaker car, but we still fought for the title until the finale. So if I could change one thing in my career, it would probably be that.”

This isn’t the first time Alonso has made this admission either. This tells us how deeply affected Alonso is by losing out to Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari years.

It is truly a drive to survive in this world of Formula 1, and most drivers don’t last very long. In fact, there is no driver in the history of the sport who has lasted longer than Alonso. The Spaniard is still performing at the top level despite his advanced years. The reason? According to David Coulthard, it’s his anger stemming from not winning more than two championships.

Coulthard said, “The second reason why I think Fernando is so strong is- he’s angry. He’s angry that he’s only won two world championships and that anger is what drives him to still have the need and that’s the key thing. When I said earlier, ‘you don’t lose the speed, you lose the need’, he still has the need.”

Anger seems to be the biggest motivator for Alonso at the moment, and it seems to be working. The Spaniard is showing no signs of slowing down and if the AMR23 will allow him, he will fight for the championship once again.
