Tired after continued failure year after year, Fernando Alonso bid adieu to F1 in 2018. But the undying need, the need for speed, pulled him right back in after a hiatus of just 2 years. The Spaniard created a great buzz as he announced his comeback to F1 with Alpine (rebranded from Renault) the team he had won his back-to-back world championships with in 2005 and 2006. However, speaking purely in terms of numbers, he still couldn’t generate as much excitement among fans as he has lately.

In 2022, Alpine punched well above its weight to secure the P4 in the constructors’ standings ahead of McLaren. However, in doing so, they hit a roadblock in their relationship with Alonso. The car faced some reliability issues and the Asturian driver often flogged his team out in the open for it. The relationship came down to such an extent that Fernando finally made the decision to switch to Aston Martin.

Many questioned Alonso’s switch to the Silverstone-based team given how much it struggled to cope with the ground-effect regulations in 2022. However, once the AMR23 hit the tarmac in 2023, it put all doubters to shame. The two-time champion finally had a car that would land him podium finishes once again. And not once, the Oviedo-born has amassed three P3 finishes in as many races until now in the season.

L’Quipe journalist Frederic Ferret recently singing praise for Alonso, said, “Seeing him return to F1 (Alpine) and this year being at the highest level makes it much more interesting.” [Translated using Google]

“Fernando is one of those rare riders who are worth more than his record. I always thought and wrote that he was a cross Between Moss and Clark. A King Without Enough Crowns.”

Marca recently reported, “In the first two races, Fernando Alonso reached the maximum popularity index in Google in searches from around the world (100 out of 100). No driver has achieved it in the 2023 Formula 1 season.”

“Alonso throughout the world, since he first drove the AMR23 at the Sakhir circuit, he’s up 526.15% to the last Grand Prix in Australia.”

It is not just the newfound success that has made Fernando popular among the fans. Another journalist believes it is his attitude and the way he conducts himself that makes him even more exciting.

Why fans love Fernando Alonso

Ever since the start of his career in F1, Alonso has carried the personality of a livewire. Sometimes his comments come off as rude but that is the price he’s paid for being honest over the years. Perhaps that is a quality that makes him dear to the sport’s followers.
