Two-time world champion, Fernando Alonso, is just a week away returning to an F1 Grand Prix after taking a break for over two years. Considering the Spaniard’s experience, a lot was expected of him and his rebranded F1 team, Alpine Racing.

However, the reality, so far, is far from the predictions, with the French outfit looking rather dull throughout the pre-season testing in Bahrain. Hence, their poor run might cost them big time, as their rivals are looking quite comfortable.

However, not to forget, Renault, too, had a similar start to the 2020 season, with both the drivers struggling for grip. Luckily, they found a breakthrough in their challenger’s development and consistently brought in upgrades over each of the race weekends that followed.

Renault enjoyed a strong mid-season phase, securing a couple of podiums, and taking over the lead in the mid-field battle.

However, a struggle-induced latter phase meant they could not finish off what they started, and rather gifted the lead to both McLaren and Racing Point. Hence, it looks like a similar trend might continue through 2021 for Alpine.

But how is 2022 looking for Alpine? Are they still aiming for the top step?

Well, Alonso is pretty confident that they could throw in some surprises to their rivals by as early as next season, and may as well go after the championship titles.

What did Fernando Alonso say?

Speaking to BBC, the 39-year-old opened up about the prospects of Alpine leading the pack in 2022.

We understand that this year it’s not going to be possible because the regulations are a little bit different but basically the same as previous years. So, I don’t see any miracles happening there,” he said.

But I think in 2022 there’s a chance with the new regulations mixing a little bit the order of the grid. And we want to be one of those teams that surprise everybody. And to do that, we need to work hard this year.

One positive news for Alpine is that they will have one of the greatest F1 drivers piloting their 2021 challenger. And despite Alpine’s early hiccups, Alonso is looking pretty solid and pacy.

Meanwhile, the other Alpine driver, Esteban Ocon, too, is looking to be in great shape after struggling through most of the 2020 season while competing alongside Daniel Ricciardo.
