Lewis Hamilton’s former teammate Fernando Alonso had some not so encouraging words for his future teammate, George Russell. The current Williams driver is not only one of the best talents on the paddock, but he’s also considered as Hamilton’s successor at Mercedes.

Yet Alonso feels that despite Russell’s impressive time at Williams, he won’t be able to beat Hamilton.

“In those two years when I watched the races, what George achieved with Williams – even if we was not in the headlights – was very impressive. But in terms of beating Lewis, I don’t know how it will work,” Alonso said, as reported by Independent.

Alonso explained that even if Russell gets closer than Valtteri Bottas, he still won’t be able to shake off Hamilton as the ‘main preference’ for Mercedes.

“Lewis is the legend, a great champion and it is never going to be easy to beat him. It doesn’t matter how talented you are,” he added.

These comments from Fernando Alonso about Hamilton recognize his incredible abilities, who admitted he has a ‘colder’ relationship with his former teammate now. Yet it’s interesting to see Alonso shower praise on the Mercedes driver after his comments on him post the race in Brazil.

Fernando Alonso thinks Hamilton’s success is down to his car

In Brazil, Hamilton overcame every setback thrown at him on his way to victory. The Mercedes driver was passing cars as if he was in a completely different league, such was his pace.

Hamilton’s driving received praise from all parts of the globe, not just the paddock. But his former friend and teammate, Fernando Alonso, narrowed it down to simply having a faster car.

“As a driver, it’s like playing basketball and there’s one basket for you and one for the others,” Alonso said.

“They (Mercedes) score their points with a bigger basket and you have to score yours with a smaller one. So you always lose.”

It’s true that the W12 was the best car on the grid in Brazil, but Bottas was driving the same car as well. Having just a fast car isn’t what guarantees a driver wins and titles, it’s the driver himself who has to be fast in a fast car.

And Hamilton has proved many times that while his teammate and he are in the same car, there’s a massive gap in the quality between himself and everyone else.

In fact, Hamilton proved he was better than his teammate Fernando Alonso back when they shared the McLaren garage in 2007.

So it’s not a stretch to agree with Alonso that Lewis Hamilton will prove to be better than his future teammate George Russell, however impressive he is.
